Man City signs De Bruyne

DE BRUYNE

Manchester City on Sunday announced the signing of Belgium playmaker Kevin De Bruyne from German side Wolfsburg on a six-year contract.

City did not disclose how much they had paid for the 24-year-old former Chelsea player, but British media reports said the fee was a club record in the region of £58 million ($89.3 million, 79.8 million euros).

“I want to reach the highest level possible as a player and I think the most important thing is that at the end of the season we can be happy and maybe have some titles,” De Bruyne said in a statement on the City website, alongside a photo of him holding the number 17 shirt.

“I think this is the most important for the club, the players and for the fans of course.”

The deal eclipses the £49 million that City paid Liverpool to secure Raheem Sterling’s services and smashes the Bundesliga transfer record of 41 million euros, which Liverpool paid Hoffenheim for Brazil forward Roberto Firmino in July.

It also represents a three-fold increase on the fee of £18 million that Wolfsburg paid Chelsea to sign De Bruyne in January 2014.

“We are very happy to have added Kevin to our team and I have no doubt that he will be a big success on his return to the Premier League,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

“It takes a special footballer to improve our squad and I have no doubt that Kevin is certainly one of those -– he has all of the mental, physical, tactical and technical attributes required to fit straight in.

“We like to play attractive, attacking football and bringing in a player like De Bruyne will only aid us as we fight on four fronts.”

As well as Sterling and De Bruyne, City have also signed defender Nicolas Otamendi and midfielder Fabian Delph as they look to reclaim the Premier League title lost to Chelsea last season.

Pregnant and malnourished? Your baby risks ill health

Illustration

Pregnancy is a trauma to the body; or so physicians want us to know and, I dare say, they know better.
Indeed, when you remember that pregnancy takes a whopping nine months to mature into the delivery of a healthy baby if everything goes well, you will appreciate the physical and psychological changes that attend it, as well as their implications on the health of the expectant mother.
Head of Nutrition at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu, says pregnancy leads to increased oxygen consumption due to the rising metabolic needs of the mother and the developing baby.
He notes that the growth of the size of the uterus, alongside the increase of the progesterone levels, leads to increment of the respiratory rate, resulting in lower level of carbon dioxide in the blood, or what is medically known as hypocapnia – a state of reduced carbon dioxide in the blood that can lead to brain injury.
“When this condition is in a mild stage, the pregnant woman can experience constipation, nasal blockage, constant coughing, etc. She may also have visual disturbances, anxiety, transient dizziness, muscle cramps, blackouts, shortness of breath and vomiting,” experts warn.
Consultant Paediatrician at the Calabar General Hospital in Cross River State, Dr. Friday Odey, warns that the health of the unborn baby and his very life hang on the mother’s wellbeing; hence, whatever affects the expectant mother is very likely to affect her unborn baby.
Indeed, the United Nations Children’s Fund laments that the diets of women often lack nutrients, which endanger womanhood; and that when dietary deficiency extends to pregnancy period, it could lead to irreversible damage on both the mother and her baby.
“And that is why pregnant women are counselled to eat well and to also observe other healthy habits while the condition lasts,” Isokpunwu enthuses.
At the UNICEF workshop warning the nation on the effects of malnutrition on children and the need for pregnant women to imbibe good dietary and other habits that will ensure mother-child wellbeing, experts agree that the effects of nutritional deficiency in pregnant women have been identified as the major causes of unsafe pregnancy and maternal mortality in Nigeria.
Gynaecologists say good management of a pregnancy will improve the foetal status too, noting that it is one of the reasons why pregnancy care is two-pronged: caring for mother and her unborn baby at the same time.
Isokpunwu says no matter the level of care available to a pregnancy woman, nothing will work positively if the expectant mother does not eat balanced diet.
He counsels, “Healthy diet is an important part of a healthy lifestyle at any time, but it is especially vital if you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Eating healthily during pregnancy will help your baby to develop and grow, and will keep you fit and well.”
Nutritionists add that while a pregnant woman doesn’t necessarily have to go on a special diet, it’s important to eat a variety of different foods every day in order to get the right balance of nutrients that you and your baby need.
Experts recommend eating fruit and vegetables; as well as foods that contain carbohydrates, protein, dairy (eggs, cheese and yoghurt); and moderate quantities of foods that contain sugar and fat such as butter, oils, salad dressings, chocolate, biscuits, pastries, etc.
Nutritionists say fruit and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals; as well as fibre, which helps digestion and prevents constipation. They add that starchy foods such as bread, potatoes, breakfast cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, maize, millet, oats, sweet potatoes, yams, etc., are important sources of vitamins and fibre, and are satisfying without containing too many calories.
Protein-rich foods such as meat (avoid liver), fish, poultry, eggs, beans, pulses and nuts are also recommended.
However, physicians say though it is best to get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat, when you’re pregnant, you need to take some supplements as well to make sure you get everything you need.
They note that the main reason for this is because no matter how much we try, cooking, storage and the way we handle foods generally are capable of destroying some of the nutritional elements derivable from them.
This is supported by experts at the United States Department of Agriculture, who note that during pregnancy, the mother’s needs for several vitamins and minerals increase.
“You need enough for your growing baby’s needs as well as your own needs. This makes it difficult to get all that you need from food. This is especially true for folic acid and iron: During pregnancy, mothers need to consume enough nutrients to meet their increased needs as well as those of their growing baby,” Isokpunwu submits.
Again, the authorities at the United Kingdom-based National Health Service agree that while it is best to get vitamins and minerals from the food you eat, when pregnant, you will need to take some supplements as well to make sure you get everything you need.
A Professor of Pharmacognosy, Maurice Iwu, notes that naturally-prepared food supplements, otherwise called nutraceuticals, contain ingredients that promote health and wellness, maintain weight and fight diseases.
Iwu says nutraceuticals contain food products such as zinc, magnesium, iodine, copper, iron, calcium, folic acid, vitamins B12 and B6, anti-oxidants, vitamin K and selenium.
Experts say a dietary supplement that contains all these nutritional elements in balanced proportion will help in nurturing both mother and child during pregnancy; and, after delivery, during the breastfeeding period.

US embassy attends to visa complaints on Hangouts

Internet Punch illustration

Three officials of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, of Friday, interacted with Nigerians from different parts of the country for an hour and three minutes. They spoke on what applicants should do or avoid when processing the US visa.

The live show was not a television programme. Recognising the growing influence of digital media, the visa officers took to Google Hangouts to provide answers to questions bordering applicants while busting various myths around visa processing.

The officers said they took to Google Hangouts to help applicants relate with the embassy directly instead of patronising touts and agents.

The session, which was moderated by Oluwaseun Olaniyan, an on air personality, gave the US embassy officials an opportunity to explain the differences between the immigrant and non-immigrant visas, tricks in the application process and likely pitfalls that applicants should avoid.

The visa officers also explained the rationale behind some common questions and how responses increase or reduce applicants’ chances of getting a visa. For instance, they spoke on why social and economic ties had become an important question during an interview.

In the course of the interactive session, viewers were given an opportunity to ask personal or general questions. All that was required was a click on a keyboard.

Few days before the Google Hangouts, the embassy sent a press statement, inviting interested individuals to hook on to the event. It also gave an hashtag – #AskTheVOs – through which questions would be received.

Indeed, participants bought into the show, sending questions bordering on income range that could be considered satisfactory for anybody to be given a visa.

But the officers said that the important thing, in the case of non-immigrant applicants, was applicants’ ability to prove that they had economic ties with their countries of residence. They noted that those who satisfied all conditions were never refused.

“Ties are essentially the various aspects of your life that bind you to your country of residence: your possessions and family relationships. Visa officers pay a particular attention to ties as they have to do with an applicant’s home country or country from which they are applying,” they said.

The officers advised visa seekers against relying on agents to fill application forms, adding that visa agents were only motivated by the financial rewards instead of helping their clients to secure visas.

“We strongly discourage the use of touts and agents at any point in the visa process. These agents often give applicants false information. Ultimately, touts and companies are primarily interested in making money not getting you a visa. They do applicants a disservice.

“Touts and agents are part of the reason the consulate reaches out to the Nigerian public through events like this Google Hangouts. We strongly recommend that people apply for a visa and go through the entire process on their own,” they said.

According to the officers, visa process could be carried out by applicants without any assistance. The embassy’s website, they noted, was a sufficient guide for even a first-time applicant.

“Application for a U.S. visa is simple and straightforward. Every piece of information you need can be found on our website,” they noted.

One of the issues they emphasised during the session was that getting a visa does not guarantee an entry into a foreign country but only allows the holder to present himself at a port of entry. They described the visa as “an endorsement issued by a government.”

At the end of the Google Hangouts, the embassy’s representatives said members of the public whose questions were not addressed, could relate with them through #AsktheVOs.

But some of the participants said U.S. visa process was not as simple as the officers made Nigerians to believe, asking why hundreds of applicants were still disqualified daily if it were that simple.

For instance, tweeting on @Davidbeloveth, David Arogundade said, “Some questions are not thoroughly dealt with because I don’t think it is that simple.”

Natural Cures For Back Pain

According to Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia, back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. However, internal structures such as the gallbladder and pancreas may also refer pain to the back.

Most back pain is felt in the lower back. The remainder of this article considers back pain in all regions.

The onset of back pain may be acute or chronic. It can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be characterised by a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include symptoms other than pain. Examples of these symptoms may include tingling, weakness or numbness in the legs and arms, indicating injury to the nerves.

We often get a strained and aching back if we lift something heavy, keep stooping over a work desk all day, or simply due to overwork of the back. In these situations, it is always advisable to try some natural cure for back pain that will relieve you from the pain without any harmful side effect.

However, keep in mind that you should resort to home remedies only if the back pain is due to some such simple reasons. If along with the back pain there is weakness, pain or numbness in the legs, it may be an indication of some more serious problems and hence, you should immediately see a doctor.

To Ease Back Pain Here Are Top Natural Cures:

Apply Ice: Ice Pack For Back Pain

It is a good idea to apply ice to the injured area of the back within 24 hours of the injury. This will keep the inflammation down and also prevent the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain. Hence, it acts as a natural pain killer. The best way to apply an ice pack is to apply it for 20 minutes, then take it off for 30 minutes and repeat application for 20 minutes.

Change Your Mattress

One major cause of back pain could be an inferior quality mattress. Lumpy mattresses or ones, which do not support the back sufficiently can result in a painful back. Hence, you should invest in a good mattress that provides good back support to cure recurrent back pains

Get A Hot Bath

If the injury occurred more than 24 hours ago, ice will not be of help. After the first day, heat will help in increasing the elasticity of the muscles; hence, it will be a good idea to soak in a hot water tub for 20 minutes at least. Dong this will provide a natural cure for back pain. Women, who are pregnant should not try the hot soak method as increase in body temperature over 100 degree Fahrenheit may cause birth defects or even miscarriage.

Don’t Keep Lying Down

Earlier, most people believed that when suffering from back pain, it was best to take bed rest, but nowadays most medical professionals have changed their opinion. This is because modern research has proved that lying down for long periods not only fails to relieve back pain but even worsens it in some cases. If you do feel the need to lie down, you should do so with two pillows under your knees because this is a great natural cure for back pain. More than three days of bed rest can cause the back muscles to become weak and make you more prone to a sore back.

Get A Massage

A professionally executed massage can relieve back pain almost instantly if it is not too severe. If you are unable to get a professional masseuse, you can ask one of your family members or friends to give you a massage. Nowadays, many massage therapists also make house calls. So, it will be a good idea to check the yellow pages to find such a massage therapist for this natural cure for back pain.

Company Says Original Inhabitants Have Been Compensated
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the $18.5 billion Centenary City Project flagged off by former President Goodluck Jonathan last year. He noted that skills, expertise and vast experience that will be brought into Nigeria to build the Centenary City on the Dubai model, will also be of immense benefit to the country’s overall development.

The project which is 100 percent private sector driven has generated a lot of controversy in recent times and has of late been turned into a subject of litigation between the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, who spearheaded the initiative, and a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Cairo Ojuogboh.

Buhari had summoned the Governing Board of the Project, chaired by the former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and his members to offer explanations on the project.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the Presidency yesterday in Abuja welcomed an assurance from Centenary City Plc that all the original inhabitants of the site have been fully compensated.

Shehu noted that after being briefed by the Chairman of the company’s board of directors, Abubakar and members of its management team, Buhari praised the Centenary City’s main development partners from the United Arab Emirates for having enough confidence in Nigeria to agree to invest about $18.5 billion in the project.

According to him, the President also welcomed the assertion by Abubakar and his team that the project will create about 250,000 more direct jobs in the Federal Capital Territory and about half a million indirect jobs.

He said that he looked forward to regular updates on the Centenary City’s development.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was also present at the briefing, said that the issue of the rights of the original inhabitants of the site acquired for the Centenary City had been of concern to the present administration.

“We are glad that it is being handled,” he said while welcoming the assurance that compensation had been paid to those who will be displaced by the project and that the issue of their relocation was being addressed.

Abubakar and the management of the Centenary City also told President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo that the project would be totally private sector driven.

In a joint briefing of State House Correspondents after the meeting, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Federal Capital Territory Administration (MFCTA), John Chukwu, said there was no truth in the report that the financiers have backed out. “All members are available and they can explain later”.

On reports of short changing Nigerians by former government officials, especially as it concerns reported N1.2billion waiver, he said: “I am not aware of any short changing”.

On allegations that the former SGF appropriated plots without following due process, Chukwu said: “ The company is here, they can answer such questions.”

Also speaking, the Managing Director, Centenary City Plc, Dr Odenigwe Ike Michaels said that the project is owned by 40 local and international investors.

His words: “Under our agreement with FCTA and other stakeholders, we have paid all the compensation on the Centenary City site, and we are going ahead with the relocation which is being supervised by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

Concerning allegations that Anyim owns the project, Odenigwe said: “We do not respond to rumours, we only respond to facts”.

The immediate past SGF, Anyim Pius Anyim, was also part of the delegation.

Are anti-ageing pills, creams doing more harm than good?

AGING-FOODS-Copy

VITAMINS are good for us. We have grown up with this as a basic fact of health. That’s why it seems like common sense to take supplements and to use creams with vitamins C and E to keep our skin looking young.

These vitamins have gained renown for working as antioxidants. Supplement-makers promise that antioxidants protect the cells that make up our skin and internal organs from being damaged by free radicals – molecules produced by our bodies as we process oxygen, which can also be inhaled from polluted air and cigarettes. They claim that this damage is a significant cause of ageing.

However, disturbing evidence is emerging that shows antioxidant supplements are not only often unnecessary, they may also do more harm than good.

New studies reveal that taking supplementary vitamins C and E can switch off the body’s ability to protect itself against disease and damage – increasing our danger of premature death. These two vitamins may even prevent us benefiting from exercise.

Vitamins C and E are key to the multi-million-pound anti-ageing beauty industry, which markets them as a magical ‘elixir of youth’. But a new investigation has reported that they can instead make skin age faster.

It has been thought that free radicals can break down our cells’ protective membranes and damage the DNA inside. This in turn may make the cells age faster, as well as increasing the risk of cancerous mutations developing.

However, the California-based Buck Institute for Research on Ageing this month published work suggesting that free radicals are essential for skin healing and healthy regeneration in people under 50.

When the scientists bred mice with excess free radicals, they expected to see their skin wrinkle prematurely. But instead the opposite happened: their skin quality improved.

Dr. Michael Velarde, the study’s lead author, says that while scientists previously believed free radicals to be harmful to skin, it seems that nature has harnessed their powers to ‘optimise skin health’ – though the precise workings of the process are not yet understood.

It is only once we pass the age of 50 that our cells’ energy stores get depleted and wear out, and the free radicals’ benefit ebbs away, the researchers said. So women under 50 who use vitamins C and E to keep their skin young may actually be making it age faster.

It is just one of the latest studies to show that we should stop treating free radicals as the ‘enemy’.

They may pose a challenge to our cell health, but it appears that our cells need to be challenged in order to remain robust. It’s rather like they need regular workouts in the gym in order to stay buff.

Michael Ristow, a professor of energy metabolism at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, has found that our bodies create free radicals when we exercise intensely. This prompts our bodies to mount better defences against those free radicals, effectively strengthening our cellular defences and making our mitochondria – the tiny powerhouses that generate the energy within our cells, which we need to survive – work harder.

An earlier overview of human studies showed that the use of the popular antioxidant supplements beta-carotene, vitamin E, or vitamin A slightly increases a person’s risk of death.

The study also showed no benefit — and no harm — for vitamin C supplements. Selenium supplements tended to very slightly reduce risk of death.

Oxidative stress — caused by highly reactive “free radical” compounds circulating in the blood — is a factor in most diseases.

Antioxidants sweep up these free radicals. It seems to be a no-brainer that taking antioxidant supplements would protect your health. But it may not be that simple.

The detailed analysis of human studies of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E shows that people who take these antioxidant supplements don’t live any longer than those who don’t take them. In fact, those who take the supplements have an increased risk of death.

The finding, reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association, comes from Goran Bjelakovic, MD, DrMedSci, of the University of Nis in Serbia; Christian Gluud, MD, DrMedSci, of Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark; and colleagues.

In 2009, Professor Ristow reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that if we take antioxidant vitamins, the strengthening system is blocked and fails to work. Meanwhile, in June, research reported to the American Diabetes Association warned that giving vitamin C and E supplements to diabetic patients could increase their risk of dying prematurely.

Kumar Sharma, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, who led the study, believes this is because diabetic patients’ mitochondria tend to underperform. Therefore, they suffer particularly badly if their cells are not stimulated into behaving energetically by free radicals. In turn, vital organs can become extremely susceptible to damage.

Obesity and cancer

There are many reasons why you should avoid being overweight or obese; and cancer is one of them. It has long been known that excess weight increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes. But, fewer people know about the frightening link between cancer and obesity.

A recent report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer estimates that being overweight and inactive accounts for one-fifth to one-third of all breast, colon, endometrial, kidney and oesophageal cancers. IARC says strong evidence also associates obesity with higher risk of cancers of the pancreas, uterus, prostate and ovary.

New findings suggest that fat cells constantly secrete a variety of hormones and other growth factors into the bloodstream. In obese and overweight individuals, greater amounts of these hormones and growth factors are continually pumped into the bloodstream. Cells are urged to grow and divide at an accelerated rate. Thus, according to this theory, the random mutations that can lead to cancer are more likely.

Are you at risk?

Most of us know when we gain weight. Clothes no longer fit, the mirror becomes an irritating reminder, and the scale is permanently hidden under the bed. Many of us, however, have learnt to overlook these signs. Use either of the following two methods to ascertain whether you need weight control and, consequently, lower your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Body Mass Index: This is one common method used to measure overweight and obesity levels. BMI shows the range of healthy and unhealthy weights for different heights.

Waist circumference: This is a complementary means of assessing possible risks due to excess body fat. Place a tape measure around your waist immediately above your hipbone. Measure right after exhaling. For women, a waist measurement of 35 inches or more indicates high risk. For men, the significant figure is 40 inches or more.

Arik crew member held in Britain with 20kg of cocaine

The UK Border Force yesterday arrested Chika Egwu Udensi, a cabin crew member of Nigeria’s flag carrier airline, Arik for being in possession of substance suspected to be cocaine. The suspect was said to be in possession of about 20 kg of cocaine. The airline however told New Telegraph that it was carrying out its private investigation to determine how the cabin crew member came about the suspected banned substance.
This has cast a dark shadow on Nigerian airline crew following their incessant arrests, particularly by UK authorities. A top official of Nigeria Immigration Service, who spoke to New Telegraph on condition of anonymity, said it has become very difficult to detect them here in Nigeria because of the privileges they enjoy, coupled with what he described as insider assistants, who help them with the banned substance to the aircraft.
The source said it was a worrying sign not only for the airlines but to security at the nation’s airports. Spokesman for Arik Air, Mr. Banji Ola, in a statement yesterday, confirmed the arrest of the cabin crew whose name was not given as at the time of going to press. Ola said, “A member of Arik Air cabin crew was on Monday night arrested at Heathrow Airport London by the UK Border Force in connection with alleged possession of items suspected to be banned substances”.
He disclosed that the airline was presently carrying out its private investigation to determine how the cabin crew member came about the suspected banned substance, adding that the airline would also be cooperating fully with the UK authorities and other appropriate agencies in their investigations. His words: “The airline again reaffirms its commitment to the fight against drug and illicit substances trafficking and will not tolerate the use of any of its aircraft or crew for the courier of banned items and substances”.
He reiterated that the carrier carries out very stringent checks on all members of staff and its travelling guests ahead of all flights, noting that the airline will continue to focus its attention on measures to prevent the possibility of any future similar incidents. “Arik Air is a responsible Nigerian company; always seeking to maintain and uphold the integrity and proud reputation of the nation”, he added.

The consecrated virgins are similar to nuns in that they live chaste lives. But they do not live in convents and they are not obliged to take on any particular work for the Catholic Church. However, most volunteer for their local diocese or Church associations.
Hayes, who is a theology teacher at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne, said she decided to become a consecrated virgin after years of prayer and soul-searching.

She is now one of only 3,500 consecrated virgins around the world and the first consecrated virgin at the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese in 25 year

CBN bars foreign firms from printing cheques for Nigerian banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has denied accreditation to foreign printers who hitherto printed cheque books for some Nigerian banks.
In a circular released, yesterday, entitled: “Circular to deposit money banks, cheque printers and other stakeholders on the accreditation of cheque printers for 2015/2016″ and signed by Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department, Dipo Fatokun, the apex bank said it has duly notified all accredited printers and issued certificates to them.
It listed all the accredited cheque printers to include Superflux International Ltd, Tripple Gee and Company Plc, Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Plc, Euphoria Group and Popi Printing Company Ltd. The apex bank said it undertook the exercise to ensure an efficient payment and settlement system.

Six feared killed as helicopter plunges into Lagos lagoon

Six feared killed as helicopter plunges into Lagos lagoon
Story by  Juliana Francis, Wole Shadare and Murtala Ayinla

Six rescued

At least six passengers aboard a Bristow helicopter died yesterday when it crashed into the lagoon at Oworonsoki, Lagos. The helicopter, said to be returning from an oil rig at Escravos, Delta State, plunged into the lagoon near the Third Mainland Bridge, about 4pm. It was heading to Ikeja Airport, Lagos.
The helicopter was said to be carrying at least 12 passengers, including the pilot and co-pilot, when it crashed into the water behind the Oworoshoki Police Station. At press time, it was not clear what led to the accident. But, residents claimed there was a loud bang before the helicopter crashed.
An air traffic controller, said: “The helicopter with registration number 5N-BDG was said to be returning from the Escravos when the accident occurred.” Fishermen, who first sighted the helicopter as it flew zigzag through the sky, noted that it appeared as if it had an engine problem. They said that the helicopter made a shuddering noise and then plunged into the lagoon.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Patricia Amadin, confirmed the crash. About 5pm, a rescue team made up of the police, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), etc, had retrived four bodies and rescued six passengers. “The helicopter belongs to Bristow Helicopter. We believe that 12 passengers were on board. Our men and NEMA officials have rescued six people and brought out four corpses.
“For now, we do not know the identity of the rescued or dead. We also do not know whether they are foreigners or Nigerians. The search for more passengers is still on,” Amadin said. Among those rescued, two were seriously injured and were immediately rushed to Afolabi Hospital, located at New Garage, Bariga, while others were taken to Gbagada General Hospital. The Public Relations Officer (PRO), NEMA, South-West Zone, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, also confirmed the crash.
He said: “No distress call was sent to NEMA alert system from the chopper, but rescue agencies are on their way to the scene of the incident. Three dead bodies recovered so far. Two injured have been taken to Afolabi Hospital. Another injured person is receiving treatment at the General Hospital.”
When contacted, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) said its officials were already on their way to the scene of the accident and would make their findings public. The spokesman for AIB, Tunji Oketunbi, said it was too early to ascertain the cause of the accident.
The AIB said it was already collaborating with relevant agencies to commence investigations into the cause of the crash. Officials of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed the crash of the chopper but could not get details of the accident. The NCAA spokesman, Fan Ndubuoke, said in a statement that the helicopter was scheduled to arrive Lagos 15.35 pm and had 12 passengers on board, including the crew.
He said: “At present, officials of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Police are at the site, providing rescue operation for the victims.
While this is ongoing, further details will be communicated as appropriate.” Relatives of victims and staff of the helicopter have contacted local divers to retrieve the two missing bodies.
The helicopter was said to have been hired by Indigo Drilling located on Victoria Island, Lagos. One of the staff of the oil company, who negotiated with the local divers, said efforts were being made to get financial support to encourage the divers. According to him, the divers promised to search for the remaining bodies overnight. “Please come over, the work is to be done overnight.
This is about the helicopter crash around our area in Owowronshoki,” one of the divers said while calling a colleague on the phone. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule, and the Secretary to State Government, Tunji Bello, yesterday visited the survivors at the Gbagada General Hospital. According to Adebule, four of them were in a good condition.
She noted that other two were at Afolabi Hospital. She said: “I just spoke with the victims and they are responding well. We will also transfer the other two at the private hospital here. We can’t give you the accurate figure of those affected yet because rescue efforts are still ongoing.
We are still searching the site and we hope to get more people rescued.” A doctor on duty at the general hospital said the chances of the victims surviving were high. He added: “Two sustained bone injuries and burns.”

Sijuwade for burial tomorrow, as chiefs confirm death

Sijuwade for burial tomorrow, as chiefs confirm death

story by Adeolu Adeyemo, Philip Nyam and Emmanuel Anule
Body arrives today from London
Finally, Ife chiefs confirm monarch’s death

Buhari, Dogara, Aregbesola, Kalu mourn

After a series of denials, the Ife Traditional Council yesterday admitted that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has passed on. Members of the council, comprising high chiefs in Ife, visited Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, in Osogbo to formally break the news of the death of the monarch to the governor, ahead of his burial tomorrow.
The monarch’s body will arrive in Nigeria today from London, the late Sijuwade’s son, Adetokunbo, said yesterday. The chiefs, who criticised the violation of Ife tradition by the media, had until yesterday, strenuously denied the passage of the king after it was reported that he died in London on July 28 at the age of 85. With the official confirmation of the monarch’s death, President Muhammadu Buhari, House of Representatives Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Aregbesola and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, paid tributes to the late Sijuwade.
The traditional chiefs arrived at the Government House, Osogbo, around 2pm to brief the governor. The Obalufe, Chief Solomon Omisakin, who led members of the traditional council, told the governor that the king had joined his ancestors. He said: “The delay in the announcement of Ooni’s death was due to strict adherence to Yoruba tradition of announcing the death of a monarch.
“It is imperative for the council to lay to rest the rumours making the round on the death or otherwise of the late Ooni of Ife but the announcement of the monarch is not one that would be made in the market place or any other social gathering. “We, the Ife Traditional Council, have come here to brief you the governor and the government of Osun about the passing on of our royal majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife. “The breaking of the news of the demise of the king must follow traditional ways and rites; that is why it is coming at this time.”
In his response, the governor recounted the last message he received from the late monarch on July 23 when he briefed him of his medical trip abroad. Aregbesola described the late Sijuwade as a person who during his life time did everything humanly possible to uplift the Yoruba tradition.
“It should be on the record that during his life time, he showcased and left the traces of Yoruba tradition any where he visited across the globe.” During his address, Aregbesola read the text message the late Ooni sent to him when he was going for a medical trip abroad.
“I am still not feeling good, so I am travelling abroad for further medical treatment this week. “I place you and your government in the hands of God and under His continuous guidance,” the governor quoted the late monarch as saying in his text message. Also, a separate letter signed by Obalufe of Iremo quarters and Vice Chairman, Ife Traditional Council, Oba Folorunso Omisakin and Prince Adetokunbo Sijuwade, for and on behalf of the Olubuse Royal Family of Ogbooru Ruling House, also officially told Aregbesola of the death of the monarch.
The letter, dated August 12, 2015, a copy of which was made available to reporters in Osogbo, read: “On behalf of the entire Royal House of Olubuse Family, we write to formally notify you of the transition to eternal glory of our father, grandfather and great grandfather, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II.
“Our father, until his death recently, was the Ooni of Ife and permanent Chairman of Osun State Council of Obas and Co-chairman, Nigeria National Traditional Council. He ascended the throne of his ancestors on the 6th December, 1980.
“Kindly also be informed that an interdenominational service will hold in his honour on Friday,14th, August at 10.00 am prompt in front of the palace. “We will be grateful sir, if Your Excellency would honour us with your presence at the event.” On the day the chiefs formally announced the king’s passage, his kingdom looked like a ghost city as traditional priests took over the affairs of the town to perform traditional rites. Many of the residents stayed indoors to avoid any untoward incident.
The traditional worshippers who were said to have kept vigil at the palace to perform rituals, continued with it in the early hours of the day by cutting down all trees in the palace and in the markets.
Also, the ancient traditional door located in the palace, which always remains permanently closed until the passage of any monarch, has been opened by the fraternity group members. It was gathered that the door plays a significant role in the life and death of any traditional ruler of the ancient town as its opening and closure mean “life and death” of any king in the land.
Meanwhile, Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of the Sijuwade. The president, in a statement yesterday by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, condoled with the late Ooni’s family, his friends, associates and subjects, as well as the government and people of Osun State on the death of the monarch. Buhari joined them in mourning the revered traditional ruler who will be long remembered and celebrated for his worthy service, over more than three decades as the chief custodian of the traditions of the Yoruba and his invaluable contributions to the sustenance of the cultural heritage of his people within and outside Nigeria.
According to the president, the late Sijuwade’s place in posterity has already been assured by his long and worthy service to his people and country as well as his notable contributions to the development of his community, state and country as a leading businessman, administrator and inspirational traditional ruler. Dogara on his part, expressed shock over the demise of Sijuwade. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Turaki Hassan, yesterday, Dogara described the Ooni`s death as a monumental loss to Nigeria.
The Osun State Government also commiserated with the family of the Ooni, the people of the state and the Yoruba on the death of the monarch. The government expressed its condolence message in Osogbo through a statement by Director, Bureau of Communication & Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon. “Ooni Sijuwade was a study and model in royalty.
He embodied the best in traditional pomp. He exalted the place of the royalty among our people. His contributions towards maintaining a place of pride for the Yoruba race on the world are huge.
“A loss though, we are, as a people, are consoled by the fact that our Imperial Majesty lived a fulfilled life; one happily hallmarked by the great impact on his subjects, the entire state, region and nation,” the statement said. Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salaam, in his condolence message, commiserated with Buhari, Aregbesola and the Yoruba nation over the death of Sijuwade. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Goke Butikakuro, Salaam expressed the regrets of the parliament over the departure of the king, saying his absence at this critical phase of national life would be deeply felt. In his tribute, Kalu described the late monarch as an embodiment of peace.
According to Kalu in a condolence message signed by his Special Adviser, Prince Kunle Oyewumi, the paramount ruler was an elder statesman who displayed love and fairness to all irrespective of tribal, religious and political differences.
“Nigeria has lost a great personality. Oba Sijuwade demonstrated genuine leadership by contributing to both local and national issues objectively. He was a symbol of culture and tradition beyond the shores of the African continent. His reign brought unprecedented development to Ile- Ife and his memories will remain evergreen in the minds of the people.
“His reign brought unprecedented development to Ile-Ife and his memories will remain evergreen in the minds of the people. Above all, he was humane, cerebral and outstanding in all ramifications. Our hearts and prayers are with the Sijuwade family at this grief-stricken period,” Kalu said.

Hopes fade for missing Med migrants

Search teams in the Mediterranean say they don’t expect to find any more survivors from a boat carrying around 600 migrants which sank off Libya.
Officials initially feared hundreds had drowned but the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said 400 people were rescued.
The Italian coast guard said 25 bodies have been recovered so far but it is unclear how many people are missing.
More than 2,000 migrants are said to have died in 2015 trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
Wednesday’s incident occurred when the packed fishing boat ran into rough weather about 15 miles (25km) from Libya’s coast.
A distress call was picked up in Sicily and one of the first ships on the scene was an Irish navy vessel, the LE Niamh. But as she launched her boats, the migrants apparently moved to one side of the fishing boat, causing it to capsize.
“Those that were on deck would have managed to jump, some of them drowned and some of them were saved,” said Martin Xuereb of the Migrant Offshore Aid Station in Malta, one the groups involved in the rescue effort.
“I think it’s unlikely that any additional survivors will be picked up.”
Seven ships as well as helicopters have been involved in the search operation.
Cmdr Filippo Marini of the Italian coast guard said survivors had indicated that between 400 and 600 people were on board the boat when it capsized, reports the BBC.
Melissa Fleming, a UN refugee agency (UNHCR) spokeswoman, said about 100 people are thought to have been travelling in the boat’s hull at the time,, adding: “The boat capsized very fast”.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said its Dignity I vessel was one of the first to arrive at the scene. Two more of the medical charity’s boats arrived later in the day.
“The team on the #Dignity1 can confirm that there have tragically been many deaths but does not have figures at this stage,” MSF said in a tweet.
“It was a horrific sight, people desperately clinging to lifebelts, boats and anything they could to fight for their lives,” Juan Matias, an MSF project co-ordinator on the Dignity I, said in a statement.
MSF said the vessel was initially diverted from heading to the fishing boat in order to deal with a separate vessel that was in trouble. The group said it rescued nearly 100 migrants in that incident before answering the fishing boat’s distress call.
“The fact that we were first called to assist this boat and then shortly afterwards sent to another one highlights the severe lack of resources available for rescue operations,” Matias said.

Two killed in renewed Anambra/Kogi clash

Battle over oil well persists

Two persons were yesterday beheaded and four others injured in a renewed clash between Anambra and Kogi States over the ownership of Orient Petroleum Resources Plc.

The incident happened at Eziagulu Otu in Anambra East, near the Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd office.

The attack is coming barely 24 hours after the firm’s  management informed the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, of its new wells in Aguleri, which would increase its crude oil production to 3,000 barrels per day by September.

The attackers were said to have come from Ibaji in Kogi State.

The injured persons, according to a source, had been admitted at a private hospital in Onitsha.

According to sources, the attackers, stormed farms, surprising many who ran into the river.

As at press time, it could not be ascertained whether some people were missing.

A distress message received by The Nation read: “Information reaching our town indicates that Kogi people are right now attacking Eziagulu Otu and Enugu Otu in several groups and are about to overrun the area and the oil field facilities there.”

A community leader, who pleaded for anonymity, described it as a sad situation.

Police Commissioner Mr. Hosea Karma confirmed the incident. He said his men and the Kogi State police command had stepped in to stop further clash.

“The attack is unfortunate. We have moved to the area but the terrain is posing a great challenge as it is surrounded by water,” Karma said.

Buhari directs Ministry to expedite action on establishment of national airline

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Ministry of Aviation to expedite action on the establishment of a new national airline.

Erstwhile national carrier, Nigeria Airways, established in 1958, was liquidated in 2003.

Buhari gave the order on Wednesday while receiving briefing from officials of the Aviation Ministry, led by the Permanent Secretary, Binta Bello.

Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the briefing, Bello said the President was concerned about Nigeria not having a national air carrier, hence the instruction to re-establish one.

``Mr President is quiet concerned with lack of a national carrier for now and he has directed the ministry to look into the possibility of having a national carrier as soon as possible,’’ she said.

She said the president was also briefed on the challenges domestic airlines were facing in spite of federal government's N300 billion intervention fund to enable them boost their operations.

She said the airlines were indebted to the regulatory agencies under the Aviation Ministry, among other challenges which had left some of them struggling to maintain optimum operational capabilities.

The Permanent Secretary announced that the four state-of-the-art terminals being constructed with loan from Chinese Bank would be ready by the first quarter of 2016.

She said that facilities being constructed at the four airports and ongoing expansion would enable them accommodate large aircraft like the Airbus 380.

Bello said the President also instructed the Ministry to begin the process of relinquishing airspace and radar control of neighbouring countries as these countries now have the capacity to cover their own airspace.

She reassured Nigerians and the international community that Nigeria's airspace ‎was safe and had just recorded a score of over 90 per cent by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). (NAN)

Buhari brought N2.7trn investments from US visit – Presidency

OK! More of these investments we need in Nigeria or what do you think!

An estimated N2.7 trillion ($13.6 billion) worth of direct investment is part of the immediate benefits accruing from President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent state visit to the United States, the Presidency claimed yesterday. The presidency also affirmed that the visit cost the Nigerian treasury less than N220 million contrary to assertions in some sections of the media. It further explained that President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, did not receive any estacode for the trip even as it contended that great savings were made by members of the delegation against previous visits. The five governors who were in the delegation, the presidency said, paid their way while permanent secretaries and other senior government officials only received their entitlements.

The presidency’s explanations followed news reports in some sections of the media that the visit was wasteful, cost N2.2 billion and was not in anyway beneficial. In a statement, yesterday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said besides the economic benefits, plans were already in motion to lift hindrances to the flow of military support for Nigeria’s war against insurgents in the North-East.
Some immediate  benefits
According to him, “some of the more immediate benefits of the President’s trip to the US include: the proposed $2.1 billion fund from the World Bank for the re-development of the northeast battered by Boko Haram; $5 billion from US investors in Nigeria’s agriculture sector; $1.5 billion investment in the Nigerian’s health sector; and another $5 billion investment from the US in our country’s power sector. “Also, as things stand, the embargo on weapons sales to Nigeria is in the process of being removed. The trip to the US by President Buhari was definitely very successful and beneficial to Nigeria. Only those rabidly determined to find faults unnecessarily will cook up falsehood in a futile effort to rake up murk where none exists.

“It is very sad that in this age of free-flowing information and in this era of change, a media organisation would make itself available as a vehicle to peddle a lie of such low and ignominious quality. “Contrary to the newspaper’s assertions, the total cost of the trip to the Nigerian taxpayer was at the most minimal, in line with the policy of this administration to cut waste and extravagance. Buhari’s son didn’t receive estacode,  govs paid their way “In point of fact, the total amount expended on the trip by the office of the President amounted to nothing near 10 per cent of the speculated figure. “Owing to the free accommodation provided by the host government, all the personal staff who accompanied the President on the trip received reduced allowances. “His son, Yusuf, received neither allowances nor estacode. The five governors on the trip each paid their way. Permanent Secretaries who travelled on the delegation did so in accordance with extant rules and none of them exceeded their estacode entitlements. “Apart from the Nigerian pilot’s mischievous  mathematics, it is  shortsighted and misleading of the newspaper to have claimed that President Buhari’s trip to the US achieved nothing. “Nigerian-US relations had suffered severely over the past few years. That relationship has now been reset. The benefits of this symbiotic relationship will become more and more evident as the Buhari administration continues to tackle the challenges of  corruption, security and the economy.”
